Feeding Time

Feed time are the most important times of the day according to the horses. Being very routine driven animals they always turn up at the gate when it is feed time. If they are in the top paddock then they tend to come and look through the kitchen window if they think you are late. They have two hard feeds a day each along with their individual additives and medication. Each of their feeds is individual and varies as a result of the time of year and the work they are doing. Rooney eats the most as he burn's energy like nothing playing around. In addition to their hard feeds they graze at pasture most of the day. We have two main paddocks each around 4 acres in size. We alternate them between these based on the need to rest and treat the grass. During the winter they have hay provided at the field shelter and in their beds when they come in at night. Daly has a restricted diet as a result of his diabetes and has special treats as he is allowed only a few carrots and no apples at all. He also has to wear a grazing muzzle during most of the year to throttle back his intake. All three are good with their food but strict discipline is enforced during their feed time. The pictures below show the horses after feeding sneaking snacks and anything else they can.

Rooney is a master at sneaking extras. This includes looking sorrowful at the feed room door, in the hay barn or pleading at the edge of the field when we are having a barbeque as the pictures below show.
